Golding leads Chester JV past C-Z-R
Chester sophomore Jacob Golding ran for 137 yards and three touchdowns, and Yellow Jackets built a 21-point, second-half lead in a 27-18 win over the Christopher-Zeigler-Royalton Bearcats on Monday at Spann Field.
It was the second 100-yard game of the season for Golding, who also ran for 115 yards in a 44-13 nonconference loss to Murphysboro on Sept. 22.
"He's solid," said Chester Junior Varsity Offensive Coordinator Trevor Kelkhoff about Golding. "You don't have to worry about him fumbling the ball.
The 6-foot-2, 190-pound Golding had 583 total yards and 10 touchdowns as a freshman in 2013, while leading the freshman Yellow Jackets with 60 tackles.
"He's a leader out there," Kelkhoff said. "He'll let you put (the game) on his shoulders and he's a workhorse."
C-Z-R scored a pair of touchdowns 28 seconds apart late in the game to make the score closer than the game indicated. Kaleb Pedigo hauled in a 62-yard pass from Bearcats quarterback Isaac McPhail with 1:18 left and C-Z-R recovered the ensuing onside kick.
Steven Anderson then grabbed his second touchdown catch of the night, a 50-yard pass from McPhail, with 50.7 seconds left. The extra point try failed, leaving C-Z-R with the nine-point deficit.
"Christopher got down in a situation where they had to throw the ball deep," Kelkhoff said. "Savion (Smith) rolled his ankle in the second quarter and we had to make some changes on defense.
"Two Hail Mary's and the onside kick bounced the right way for them."
Smith finished with 13 yards on three carries for Chester, while Demontae Martin had 17 yards on four carries.
Jack Hathaway contributed eight yards on two carries.
Defensively, Golding led the way again with 13 tackles, including five solo. Hathaway and Martin each had six tackles, while Wyatt Roth had five. Other contributors defensively were Daltyn Korando (4), Nick Heffernan (4), Savion Smith (3), Luke Ramos (4), Garret Welker (1), Logan Wahl (3), Clayton Richelman (2) and Joe Stahlheber (2).
"We ended up sliding Demontae into defensive end and he did a good job creating some havoc," Kelkhoff said. "He set up a lot of Golding's tackles."
Stahlheber got the start at quarterback for Chester and was 1-for-2 passing for 25 yards, a touchdown and an interception.
The 25-yard score went to Nick Heffernan with 8:51 left in the fourth quarter that put Chester ahead 21-6 after Golding ran in the two-point conversion.
Freshman quarterback Curt Meyer, fresh off of a four-touchdown game against the freshman Bearcats last week, completed one pass to Martin for 18 yards.
"Once we were up by three scores, we put Meyer in to get a couple of snaps," Kelkhoff said.
Now 4-1 on the season, and 4-0 in the Black Diamond Conference, the Chester JV has next week off before traveling to face Eldorado on Oct. 20.
"It's just fine-tuning some things," Kelkhoff said of the off week. "We had a couple of mistakes in the first half and a good speech from coach (Dallas) Redeker fixed those."
