September is 'Big Mutt Month' at the Perry County Humane Society

The Perry County Humane Society is launching a "We Like Big Mutts" campaign for the month of September to bring awareness to the difficulties of adopting larger dogs at animal shelters even though they are just as lovable and loyal as their smaller canine cousins. Perry County Humane Society is not the only shelter that experiences these difficulties in adopting larger dogs, it is an issue that most all shelters face and ultimately means for longer stays for those dogs at the no kill shelters.

This also creates problems for some shelters not wanting to take in harder to adopt dogs because their stay will ultimately longer which keeps the shelter from saving more dogs due to the lack of space. Perry County Humane Society does not deny rescue to dogs due to their size, breed, or age; but they definitely face the problems of the longer stays due to people not wanting to adopt larger dogs, older animals, and certain breeds of dogs. For example, it is common for pit bulls to stay at the no kill shelter for over a year waiting for a new home and if it is an older pit bull with medical problems they are almost impossible to re-home.

Although the volunteers at Perry County Humane Society love each every animal and give them the best possible care, the shelter life is not a life for any animal. That is why the Perry County Humane Society is declaring September as We Like Big Mutts Month! The very creative volunteers; Alice Swetland and Margaret Widelka created a video that highlights the lovable big dogs that are available for adoption at the no kill shelter located in Du Quoin.

The video can be viewed on the organization's website: www.perrycountyhumanesocietyil.com or on their facebook page. In addition to the video, the Perry County Humane Society is reducing their adoption fee to $100 (reduced by $50) for all big dogs 50 lb. and up for the month of September 2014 only.

The purpose of the reduction in the adoption fee is to bring awareness to the big dogs and give them a "leg up". The fee reduction is not meant to devalue their importance or to "give a deal" to people looking for a cheap adoption fee. All dogs that qualify for this fee reduction is indicated on their adoption website and on the individual dog's kennel at the shelter.

Every dog adopted still receives the same care before they are adopted that includes: spay/neuter, heartworm test and preventative, all annual vaccinations, microchip, veterinarian health check, flea/tick preventative, and any other health care as needed. We are asking for everyone's participation in bringing awareness to big dogs that need a home by either by adopting, sponsoring with a donation, and/or posting a picture of your big and beautiful adopted shelter dog. Pictures of adopted dogs do not need to be dogs that were adopted from Perry County Humane Society they can be from any animal shelter. Come and visit the big mutts and all their friends waiting for adoption during the shelter open hours on Saturday and Sundays from 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. at 8365 State Route 14 in Du Quoin.
