Health Department: West Nile is present in Perry County

The Perry County Health Department has been notified that a sample of mosquitoes that was collected in Du Quoin tested positive for West Nile Virus (WNV). This positive test serves as a reminder that WNV is present in Perry County. Please keep in mind that the mosquitoes tested positive and not a bird or human.

Preventing mosquito bites is an important key to keeping your family safe. The following tips can keep you and your family safe:

• Use repellents containing DEET

• Wear long sleeves and pants from dusk to dawn when mosquitoes are the most active.

• Keep window screens in good condition to keep mosquitoes out

• Get rid of breeding sites - empty standing water from flower pots, buckets, change pet and bird bath water on regular basis.

The Perry County Health Department is also collecting dead birds for WNV testing. The bird must be dead less than 48 hours, not have any obvious signs of death, damage by other animals or signs of decomposition. If you find a dead bird contact Krista at the health department (357-5371 x 117) as soon as possible. If a bird is found on the weekend, it should be placed in a cooler of ice, refrigerator or freezer.
