Treasures abound at Townwide Rummage Sale
A cloudy dawn gave way to a clear, fair day for the 2014 Carrier Mills Townwide Rummage Sale.
This annual event sees village residents and the Catskin Days Committee get a chance to sell merchandise and make some money. This event is organized by the Catskin Days Committee and allows residents to register with the committee and have their address or sale location placed on a map of sites, which is available free to all the morning of the sale.
The Catskin Days Committee was holding its rummage sale in the village municipal building and committee member Karen Shaw, said that customers had been at the door before the 6 a.m. opening.
"There were two ladies waiting in the parking lot when I got here about a quarter 'til this morning, I let them come on in and shop," Shaw said.
The committee uses the proceeds from it's sale to help fund the village's annual Catskin Days Festival, held in October each year. This years Catskin Days Festival will be held on Oct. 9, 10 and 11.
This year, 24 families or individuals participated in the sales day, and there was a little of something for everyone for sale somewhere in Carrier Mills Saturday. Clothing of all sizes, sporting goods, knickknacks, household goods and even cars were just a few of the wide variety of items that were to be found for sale throughout the village. The day saw a steady flow of curious bargain hunters prowling through town, pausing to examine, haggle and buy that particular treasure or must-have item that had caught their eye.
At the sale of Sharine Biehl on East Washington Street, an antique coronet, lots of clothes, jewelry, a mens' bicycle and a 2000 Chevrolet Venture were among the items offered. Biehl's sister, Amber Graning of Harrisburg, was selling paintings she had created.
"I've been painting since high school," Graning said. "These are a new technique for me, I've been using this style for about a year."
As the day ended and the sellers and buyers went their way with cash or treasures, another townwide rummage came to a successful conclusion. Next year's rummage sale will be held on Aug. 1 and the committee encourages residents to start planning now.
