OBITUARY: Herman E. Dortch

Herman E. Dortch, age 80, lifelong resident of Shawneetown in the Saline Mine area, died on Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2013.

Herman was born in the Saline Mine area on April 12, 1933, to the late Dave and Nellie (Maynard) Dortch. On April 25, 1952, he married Ioma (Stilts) Dortch. His faith was Church of God. He had worked in the coal mines and farmed. He loved to fly an airplane, work with horses, but mostly be around his grandchildren and other kids. He was a member of the UMWA and the Illinois Horseman's Association. Herman was a good husband, father, brother and grandfather. He will be missed.

Herman is survived by his wife, Ioma of Shawneetown; three sons, David (Joyce) Dortch of Shawneetown, Dennis (Ruth) Dortch of Junction and Danny Dortch of Browns; two daughters, Nellie (Terry) Rigsby of Shawneetown, Sharon (Billy) Winters of Marion, Ky.; and Ella Patton of Shawneetown whom they raised; 20 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and one great-grandchild; a brother, John Dortch; two sisters, Ruby Madden and Marilyn Hopson.

Visitation for Herman will be 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, 2013, at the Cox & Son Funeral Home in Shawneetown. His funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 25, 2013, at the funeral home. The Rev. Harold Miller will officiate and interment will follow at the Westwood Cemetery.
