Dancing with the Stars Recap: Monday, April 21, 2014
Are you ready to partaaaaaaay? That was the question posed by Dancing with the Stars this week, when the eight remaining pairs danced to party anthems and LMFAO's Redfoo stopped by to guest-judge.
We get the best moment of the night early on, when Emma Slater drops an entire tray of popcorn and soda during the opening number. That was an accident, right? She looks horrified. Carrie Ann also appears to have her own party going on with that hairstyle. Yikes.
Let's get this shindig started!
NeNe Leakes and Tony Dovolani (salsa)The dance: After being in jeopardy last week, Tony and NeNe are deemed safe before their dance. And yowza, it really is getting hot in her(r)e, with Tony and NeNe bringing sunshine to the ballroom both with their steamy routine, featuring a striptease by Tony and with their coordinating yellow outfits (until Tony sheds his, of course). NeNe's clearly enjoying this, and it's cute how she can't help but sing along to some parts of the song. Possibly as a result, her footwork is a little unsteady at times. What the judges say: Len tells NeNe to work on her technique. Bruno does his own mini-striptease and says that NeNe's footwork is a little shaky at times. Carrie Ann says NeNe finally looks comfortable dancing, and Red Foo adds that she "owned" it. #technicalshmectical Score: 33 (out of 40)
Candace Cameron Bure and Mark Ballas (cha cha)The dance: Candace and Mark are in jeopardy. Can she nail the sexy hip movements required for this dance? Eh ... mostly, but it could be a little looser. She's trying, though, and it's only slightly awkward. The routine is a little boring at times, but it's still one of the better numbers that they've done. Also, Candace's legs are amazing. What the judges say: Bruno compliments Candace's leg placement, but says she visibly "stops herself" at points. Carrie Ann looks disappointed and tells Candace to loosen up a little. Redfoo agrees with Bruno, but likes Candace's outfit (which looks like she's wearing the mirrorball). Len tells Candace her leg action was "terrific" but says her arms could use more rhythm. Score: 32
James Maslow and Peta Murgatroyd (quickstep)The dance: Can Peta and James top their perfect score from last week? They put forth a valiant effort, although James looks like he's playing catch-up in parts and there's a minor stumble on the last note. Peta may have overestimated her partner's coordination a bit for this one. What the judges say: Carrie Ann tells James his footwork could have been a tiny bit sharper. Redfoo says it was "quick" and compares them to crabs in the sand. (Sigh.) An exasperated-looking Len gripes about the technique, saying the footwork was a little shoddy especially during the faster parts. Bruno says James could have been lighter on his feet, but he liked the dance overall. Score: 35
Danica McKellar and Val Chmerkovskiy (cha cha)The dance: Surprise! We learn right before this dance that Danica and Val are in jeopardy. Silver lining for '90s kids: the elimination will be at least partially a Winnie Cooper vs. D.J. Tanner face-off. This routine is fun and fast-paced, has a ton of energy, and makes their jeopardy status a real head-scratcher. Also, Danica's eye-popping figure reminds everyone that swimsuit season is fast approaching. What the judges say: Redfoo says it looks like they're in love. Len says it's the best dance of the night so far. Bruno praises Danica for nailing a very "difficult" routine. And Carrie Ann says Danica has fully blossomed. Score: 36
Maks Chmerkovskiy and Meryl Davis (tango)The dance: The chemistry between Maks and Meryl is insane, and this dance is transcendent. Maks' choreography takes advantage of every inch of the dancefloor. He doesn't hold back at all, and Meryl matches him step for step. Her extensions are flawless. Overall, Len may have spoken too soon when he said Danica and Val's routine was the best of the night. What the judges say: Len is blown away and says Meryl is the first star who's been able to keep up with Maks. Bruno and Carrie Ann are both overcome, and Carrie Ann tells Meryl she already looks like a pro. We've stopped paying attention to Redfoo. Score: 40
Drew Carey and Cheryl Burke (tango)The dance: Poor Drew. He says in rehearsals that he feels like this is his last week in the competition ... and he might not be wrong. There's just no comparing him to people like Meryl, Charlie, and even Amy at this point. He's still got the awkward (and self-described) "Dad at a wedding" vibe going on, even though his hip swivels this week are a bit more fluid than we've seen previously and he's clearly having fun with the routine. What the judges say: Bruno says that Drew "put on a great show," even though his technique was all over the place. Carrie Ann agrees that he was the "life of the party." Redfoo chimes in that it was "pimp to the 10th degree," and Len compliments Drew's "commitment." Score: 32
Charlie White and Sharna Burgess (cha cha)The dance: Miffed by the judges' comments last week, Charlie and Sharna pull out all the stops for their cha cha. Charlie is feeling this number, no doubt about it. The dance feels like it would fit right in in a club, but also retains elements of a classic cha cha. Their blacklight portion at the end is nifty, too. What the judges say: Carrie Ann is giddy and notes the improvement in Charlie's hip work. Redfoo liked it, and Len says Charlie "oozes" rhythm. He wasn't a fan of the blacklight portion, but Bruno was.
Derek Hough and Amy Purdy (jive)The dance: No two ways about it: Amy continues to stun week after week. Her and Derek's "Wedding Crashers" skit is cute, but the dance itself is awesome and completely engaging. There's one minor misstep early on with a dip, but Amy more than makes up for it with a cartwheel at the end of the routine. What the judges say: Redfoo's mind is blown. Len notes their "incident" in the middle but says it was a fantastic routine. Bruno asks Amy to marry him. Carrie Ann says Amy has the best kicks and flicks she's ever seen - but notes she's going to dock them for Amy's slip. Score: 38
On to the elimination. Joining Danica/Val and Candace/Mark in jeopardy are Drew and Cheryl.
Safe: Danica and Val
Eliminated: Drew's prediction was prescient and he and Cheryl are eliminated. Aw.
