County Jail inmate dies after Sunday incident
A Randolph County Jail inmate died Monday evening at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis as a result of a Sunday incident at Randolph County Jail.
Randolph County Sheriff Shannon Wolff confirmed Tuesday that the inmate was 23-year-old Christopher B. Liter, of Steeleville. The investigation into the incident is being conducted by the Illinois State Police.
"The investigation is ongoing still," Wolff said Tuesday. "We won't have any further comment until it is completed."
A Randolph County Sheriff's Office news release on Monday stated Liter was transported to the hospital in critical condition "after attempting to harm himself."
Wolff declined to comment on whether it was a suicide attempt.
"I can't comment on any of that right now," he said. "When (the investigation) is complete, we will issue a news release."
Liter, 29-year-old Anthony J. Hagene and 25-year-old Bethany N. Moore, were all arrested on Dec. 7 in connection with an alleged Dec. 6 burglary on Streamline Road in Percy.
Obituary information for Liter posted online indicated Moore was his fiance and that he had a son and a daughter. Hagene's connection to the couple was not immediately known.
The trio was booked into the Randolph County Jail around 10:30 p.m. on Dec. 7.
Jewelry, firearms, cash and other "household items" were stolen from the residence, with some of the items found hidden underneath a rail car on nearby Union Pacific Railroad property.
Drugs were also recovered during the investigation, according to Wolff.
Liter was being held at the jail on a $50,000 bond and had been charged with residential burglary, a Class 1 felony offense punishable by up to 15 years in prison.
All three suspects were to appear in a preliminary hearing scheduled for Dec. 28 at 1 p.m.
Moore's bond was also set at $50,000, while Hagene has a $250,000 bond due to already being out on bond on the possession of a controlled substance (a Class 4 felony) at the time of his arrest.
"There's two co-defendants and I don't want to comment on the specifics since it is an ongoing investigation," said Randolph County State's Attorney Jeremy Walker.
Walker added that the preliminary hearing will be held despite recent events.
"It shouldn't change the prosecution of Ms. Moore or Mr. Hagene," he said.
An autopsy was performed on Liter on Tuesday, according to Rose Psara, chief investigator with the St. Louis City Medical Examiner's Office. Time of death was 7:04 p.m. on Monday.
"It was reported to our office and we are handling it," Psara said.
Results, including toxicology, could take between six and eight weeks to come back.
