BASKETBALL: Lady Indians blow out Steeleville; EHS falls to Johnston City
Five different Lady Indians had at least 8 points and junior Kate Smith led the way with 15 as Du Quoin knocked off Steeleville 55-26 in their season opener at the 2015 Lady Indians Tip-Off Classic on Monday night.
Du Quoin was up by just five after the first quarter, but outscored the Lady Warriors 20-5 in the second and 19-5 in the third before bringing it home with the continuous clock running in the fourth period.
"We're going to have as much depth this year as we've ever had," said DHS head coach Shawn File. "The first quarter it was a ball game, but I think just being able to rotate in a bunch of folks allowed us to wear them down. Mackenzie Jackson came in and did a good job defensively in the post, Hannah Baxter and Kat Robison came in and hit some shots. We've got some kids that have played a lot of minutes and hopefully that's going to show this year."
Jackson and Baxter were two of the four players to score 8 points with Sadie Day and Tarynn Mays also joining the group. Robison and Jordyn Bullar each added 4 points.
Alaina Caldwell did not score, but had a team-high 5 steals on defense.
"(Caldwell) did a really nice job handling their ball-handler," File said "She had a couple big steals that led to some easy baskets, and that's really how we want to score."
Day and Jackson led the Lady Indians in rebounds with 4 apiece, Smith topped assists with 6.
Du Quoin will meet Johnston City on Wednesday in the 6:30 p.m. game at the Tip-Off.
