Prep Volleyball: Harrisburg takes home top prize from Flora Tournament
The Harrisburg volleyball struggles as of late came to a screeching halt over the weekend as they took home the top prize at the Flora Tournament, winning four matches and losing one for the championship.
Harrisburg beat Flora (25-19, 25-16), North Clay (25-11, 25-12), Clay City (25-22, 16-25, 15-11) and Deiterich (25-8, 26-24), with the lone loss coming to Cisne (21-25, 25-10, 9-15).
Matty Hawkins was out due to an ankle injury she suffered against Massac County late last week, but HHS head coach Heather Cox praised the efforts of Karsyn Davis and Toni Crisp, who stepped up and stepped in.
"We had 10 girls on our bench today and every single one of them contributed. As a collective whole, serving was pretty good for the day as was the passing. When we have a good day of passing, then our offense is going to get rolling. We played some very scrappy teams (over the weekend) and they were all new teams that we had never seen before. Overall, it was a good day and a good experience for the kids."
Bryleigh Buchanan and Lilee Robinson were each named to the All-Tournament Team, with Buchanan coming away as the top vote getter.
Massac County beats Harrisburg in straight sets
Late last week, Harrisburg got an early lead in both games against Massac County, but eventually lost 25-22 and 25-21.
"We just couldn't over some mental mistakes down the stretch," Cox said. "When push comes to shove our girls just aren't mentally tough enough yet to get the win in a big game."
Matty Hawkins had seven kills and four blocks before having to leave the game with an injured ankle. Lilee Robinson had seven assists.
The Harrisburg junior varsity team also lost, falling 25-15 and 25-14.
