Prep Football: Tigers roar at the top
There wasn't much change at the top and that's fine with the Herrin Tigers.
Thanks in large part to another muscle flexing performance from Gavyn Gosha, who after two games has 485 yards and scored three touchdowns helping Herrin to a 34-13 Friday night win in Week 2 against Carbondale.
Herrin maintained its perch atop the Daily Register Southern Illinois Super 10 Prep Poll, while Murphysboro and Marion both held steady at No. 2 and 3, respectively.
Murphysboro (2-0) handled Anna-Jonesboro 35-14 last week, while Marion(1-1) went down to the wire before escaping with a 35-34 win over Champaign Centennial.
MOVING UP
Centralia (2-0) and Nashville (2-0) each moved up three spots in this week's poll after Centralia knocked off Wood River 44-16 and Nashville had little problems with Carmi-White County, winning 34-0.
Carmi-White County's counterpart in the Black Diamond Conference, Chester, who is off to a 2-0 start after hammering Hamilton County 55-0 last week remained at No. 6 and comes into this week's game at home against Vienna-Goreville ranked No. 8 in the Illinois Associated Press Top 10 poll in Class 2A.
WELCOME ABOARD
Two teams, Harrisburg and Mt. Vernon weren't ranked in the top 10 poll last week. That changed - due in large part - to Harrisburg's 21-14 win over then No. 4 Du Quoin (1-1). The Indians bounced down to No. 10 this week.
Mt. Vernon (2-0), who got a 195-yard performance on 10 carries from Jailion Rash and three touchdowns from Brandon Rutherford in a 40-6 weather shortened game at Charleston, come in at No. 8.
FALLING DOWN
Benton (1-1), which knocked off Carterville in overtime Week 1 dropped out of the top 10 this week, falling from its No. 5 spot after a disappointing 27-13 loss at Sparta.
