VOLLEYBALL: Lady Falcons fight off Joppa for first win
Just when it appeared as though Elverado might let their first victory of the season slip through their fingers as they dropped the middle set of Tuesday's home volleyball opener, the Lady Falcons bounced back strong in the third to put away Joppa 25-15, 11-25, 25-16.
"We never quit after letting the second game slip away from us," said EHS head volleyball coach Donette Wheatley. "We came back strong the third game and began to hit the ball like we should have been."
"Too many mistakes in the second game and everything they hit, passed or set went their way. They were getting all the breaks. It's great to get that first 'W' on the board."
Freshman Allie Whittington had a team-high six kills for Elverado, with four other Lady Falcons registering at least two - Tori Ehlers (4) Ellie Winthrop (3), Baylie McClanahan (2) and Haily Falter (2). Falter led the team in digs with eight. McClanahan and Emma Bigham each finished with four assists and two service aces.
In the junior varsity match, Elverado's Hope Porter served 24 consecutive points to start the match before missing on set point and the Lady Falcons won 25-1, 25-15. Jessica Elson had four kills for EHS, Melissa Sarensen had seven assists.
The Lady Falcons (1-2, 1-0) are at home again on Thursday against Crab Orchard.
