Chester man arrested after fire call
A Chester resident, 39-year-old Scott A. Schifferdecker, is facing multiple methamphetamine-related charges after a Wednesday night fire at 2302 State St.
According to Chester Police Chief Ryan Coffey, officers responded to a 911 hang up call at the residence, discovered the fire and paged out the Chester Fire Department at 10:53 p.m.
Chester Fire Chief Marty Bert told the Herald Tribune the fire was contained to an upstairs bedroom and was extinguished with minimal damage to the home.
"We knew it wasn't super bad, but we didn't want it to get out of control," Bert said. "We were on scene for about an hour."
While on scene, firefighters discovered evidence of a possible meth lab. The CPD then took over the investigation, resulting in the arrest of Schifferdecker.
Schifferdecker has been charged with aggravated unlawful participation in methamphetamine production, unlawful disposal of methamphetamine waste, unlawful possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of a hypodermic syringe.
The Illinois State Police Meth Disposal Unit was called out to dismantle the lab. A neighbor, Carolyn Jackson, told the Herald Tribune that there wasn't an "unusual amount" of activity at the home.
"I just thought people were visiting," she said. "I didn't know anything was going on like that."
Jackson lives across the street from the house with her mother, Ruby Wahl.
"That's the second or third person who has lived there," Jackson said. "The last person got evicted."
