VOLLEYBALL: Cobden fights off Lady Falcons in three sets

Elverado took Cobden to three sets, but ultimately the Appleknockers came out on top at home with a 25-19, 23-25, 25-16 win in the Lady Falcons' varsity volleyball opener.

"We really held our own tonight," said EHS head volleyball coach Donnette Wheatley. "We played a very good match against a very good Cobden team. I was very proud of our effort. The girls never backed down from their powerful hits. We did a little hitting of our own and took the second game. I'm very pleased with the start of the season at all three levels."

Sophomore Tori Ehlers had a strong game at the net for Elverado, leading the team with six kills and three blocks. Freshman Allie Whittington led aces with four, added three kills, and shared the team lead in digs (two) with Ellie Winthrop and Emma Bigham. Maycee Bowlin topped the assists category with three.

At the junior varsity level, Cobden was a three-set winner 25-23, 21-25, 15-10. Jessica Elson led EHS with seven kills and four service aces. Melissa Sarensen and Gabby Jeschke each had two digs. Hope Porter finished with six assists.

The Lady Falcons' freshman team was victorious, 22-17 with Elson's three kills helping the cause.

Elverado (0-1) is at Sesser-Valier on Tuesday.
