The Biz: Don Draper Travels to the 1980s
Ever wondered what happened to Mad Men 's Don Draper after the swinging '60s ended? John McNamee, a comic and writer, has created the Twitter account @80sDonDraper to give voice to the character's Reagan-era musings. We asked McNamee for some insights into Don's future.
TV Guide Magazine: How is Don doing professionally in the 1980s?
McNamee: The firm's gone through a lot of changes. I think it's called Sterling Cooper Draper Mr. T now.
TV Guide Magazine: His wardrobe and hair look very Miami Vice.
McNamee: Don's a trendsetter. It's Miami Vice's wardrobe and hair that look Draperish.
TV Guide Magazine: Does Don have a mobile phone?
McNamee: He does have a big old '80s cell phone, which he loves. It's the brick with which he's building the future.
TV Guide Magazine: How did he survive the '70s? Did he go to Studio 54?
McNamee: Don was in Studio 54 for the entirety of the '70s. He said it was for a client.
TV Guide Magazine: Has he switched from booze to cocaine yet?
McNamee: Drink will always be Don's first love, though he does sometimes coke the rim of his margaritas.
TV Guide Magazine: How many wives is he up to?
McNamee: Forty-seven. He's trying to get one from every state.
TV Guide Magazine: Based on Don's personal habits, does he have any chance of making it into the 1990s?
McNamee: I hope he makes it. Someone's got to sell us all on Pogs.
TV Guide Magazine: Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner has said he likes your tweets. So there's been no cease-and-desist order from AMC?
McNamee: No C&D, but no invitation to help them '80s-ify the final season, either, which is a shame. I had an emotional episode planned where everyone reacts to J.R. getting shot.
TV Guide Magazine: What do you write when you're not tweeting as Don Draper?
McNamee: I contribute to The Onion, draw a cartoon at piecomic.com, blog and do sketch comedy. In all my work, I try to keep the Don Draper spirit and blood-alcohol content.
