Today in the News: Report says Arizona governor likely to veto anti-gay bill
News to know
NBC News reported today that Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer is likely to veto the state's anti-gay bill, which would allow businesses to refuse to serve gays and lesbians. A person close to Brewer told NBC, "She doesn't want to take any actions that could jeopardize the economic momentum we've seen here in Arizona." Republican Sen. John McCain has been among those trying to get Brewer to veto the bill. If enacted, officials believe it would have a major impact on tourism, and the Super Bowl, which is slated to be played in Arizona next year, might be pulled from the state (it has happened before).
Quote of note
"If we build three east-west great walls in the American Midwest .... one in North Dakota, one along the border between Kansas and Oklahoma to the east, and the third one in south Texas and Louisiana, we will diminish the tornado threats in the Tornado Alley forever." - Physicist Rongjia Tao of Temple University, according to USA Today. Tao thinks a giant wall - 1,000 feet high and 150 feet wide - would protect the area from tornadoes.
