Army sergeants give presentations at CHS
CHESTER -- U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Nathan Moss and Sgt. Greggary Eaker came to Chester High School on the Oct. 6 and 7 to give presentations to several classes.
Moss gave presentations to students on the extreme importance of having a plan after high school and saving up for this plan.
Moss used a technique of showing the actual numbers of how living costs added to the costs of a low-tuition four-year school to make students get a good understanding of how much college actually costs.
"Presentations are the best way to reach an audience. I want to have a positive impact on people's lives," Moss said.
"Coming out of high school, people don't have a good idea about costs. People need to know these things," Eaker said.
Moss told students, although in a minimal amount of time, the significance of knowing how to keep yourself from becoming a slave of debt.
Moss and Eaker equally love the fact that they know they are helping these students to better prepare for their futures.
"I love the feedback that I get from students. I like knowing the things we talk about aren't commonly talked about, even at home," Moss said.
"The best experience is when you get to look at someone and know they're hearing you. It's good to know you're helping people," Eaker said.
To be able to present this information to high school students, you must be in the top 10 percentile, or the best at what you do.
Moss has enjoyed presenting to high school students so much that he submitted the papers to do the job full-time.
When they do their presentation, they are only given a limited amount of time to teach a lot of information in the most efficient way possible.
Although they convey a lot of information, they each have one thing they want you to get out of their speech more than anything.
"It's not what you do in this life that determines who you are, it's who you are that determines what you do," Moss said.
"The most important thing to me is the student finds their passion," Eaker said.
Moss and Eaker would like to thank the teachers, school, all staff that assisted, and the community for allowing them to come.
They want to thank the students for being so respectful and attentive.
They would like to especially thank Franciene Sabens, CHS guidance counselor, for working so hard to set up their visit.
"It's a privilege to be here. I look forward to this so much," Moss said.
