Evert B. Maddux
</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[Evert B. Maddux, 86, of Marion, passed away 1:12 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2009, at Heartland Regional Medical Center, Marion.
He was born Oct. 25, 1922, in Poplar Bluff, Mo., the son of Jack and Della Case Maddux. He married Judy Thomason of Harrisburg on Jan. 15, 1977 in Marion.
Evert worked for the A&P Grocery in Poplar Bluff from 1938 to 1963. He then transferred to Cairo and later to Marion. He owned the Busy Bee Grocery store from 1963 to 1977 and Smalls Grocery from 1977 to 1991. He worked part-time for Hightower Heating and Air Conditioning and owned Maddux Car Care.
Evert was affectionately known as the "Bologna Man," giving the children a slice of bologna while their parents shopped.
Evert was a member of Spillertown Baptist Church where he was a trustee and was very active in the building of the church. He played pedal steel guitar and harmonica. He enjoyed woodworking and making furniture. He also loved feeding and watching birds and squirrels in his yard.
He is survived by his wife, Judy; son, Lester and wife Sheila Bowles, Marion; grandchildren, Tyler Bowles, Dalton Bowles and Emilee Bowles of Marion. He is also survived by three sisters-in-law, Joanne and Clarence Rice, Harrisburg, Betty and Bill Smith, Eldorado and Cathy and Bob Haney, Harrisburg; along with three nephews and wives, Bill and Beth Rice, Bob and Kim Smith and Jason and Brandy Haney, all of Harrisburg.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Della Maddux; mother and father-in-law, Juanita and Bill Thomason; uncle, Norman Case; and a nephew, Mike Smith.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 13, 2009, at the Spillertown Baptist Church with the Rev. Shorty Alsip officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Lawn Cemetery at Harrisburg. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12, 2009, at the Spillertown Baptist Church. The J. M. Weirauch Funeral Home in Harrisburg is in charge of arrangements.
