Grand Theater in Du Quoin closes; city looks at options

Grand Theater owner Richie Baker posted the letters "CLOSED" on the theater's marquee Tuesday and the City of Du Quoin has no thought of providing a new infusion of capital to keep the theater open.

Economic development director Jeff Ashauer said the city may try to secure the physical assets of the theater, gauge the public's support for continuing to have a hometown theater and then go from there. Last year the city loaned the theater owner $20,000 to help purchase new digital projection equipment. None of that loan has been repaid. Ashauer said the theater is a landmark and, for that reason, would look for a new operator.
