OBITUARY: Imogene Shelton

Imogene Shelton, 77, formerly of Harrisburg, passed away at 3:09 p.m. Sunday, August 19, 2012, at the Memorial Hospital in Carbondale.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 23, 2012, at Elm Street Baptist Church in Murphysboro, with the Rev. Charles Allen officiating. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Ledford Cemetery near Carrier Mills. Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2012, at Pettett Funeral Home in Murphysboro and from 10 a.m. to service time Thursday at the church. Stella Imogene was born Aug. 21, 1934, in Eldorado, to Mike Horton and Stella (Cox) Horton. She had worked as a waitress at the former John's Cafe and other restaurants in Harrisburg. Mrs. Shelton was a member of the Land Street Missionary Baptist Church in Harrisburg. Imogene loved to do crafts, including crocheting and knitting. She especially enjoyed giving the things she made to her family and friends.

She married Charles Shelton Jr. July 18, 1953, in Carrier Mills and he preceded her in death May 10, 1997.

Imogene is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Sharon Allen and the Rev. Charles Allen of Murphysboro; a very special nephew whom she considered her son, Larry Winkleman and his wife Pat Winkleman, of Goodrich, Mich.; six grandchildren, Jennifer Lintz and her husband Jon Lintz, Sarah Fager and her husband Todd Fager, Tim Allen and his wife Autumn, Michael Winkleman, Linda Gail James and April Shelton; 11 great-grandchildren; and lots of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her son, Charles Wayne Shelton; her husband; four brothers; four sisters; and her parents.

The family of Imogene Shelton would like to give a special thank you to the nurses, staff and doctors at Memorial Hospital for their kindness, compassion and concern given to the family during Imogene's hospital stay.
