Shirley M. Carney

</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[Shirley M. Carney, 79, of Highland, Ind., but longtime resident of New Haven, died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2010, after an extended illness.

Shirley was born on June 27, 1931, to the late Joseph and Laura (Richards) Bates in White County.

Shirley was married to Harold Carney, who preceded her in death in 1998. She was a faithful member of the Apostolic Church in New Haven. She loved playing cards, visiting with her friends and family and was always happy and laughing. She was a good wife, mother, grandmother and sister. She will be missed.

Shirley is survived by three daughters, Cinda (Jim) Carter of St. Louis, Mo., Connie Newsome of Highland, Ind. and Gloria Carney of La Porte, Ind.; one sister, Flora Sanders of Norris City; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; four brothers, Thomas, Wilburn, Arthur and Jewell Bates; one sister, Pauline Cox; and a son-in-law, Randall Newsome.

Services for Shirley will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 20, 2010, at the Cox and Son Funeral Home in New Haven with the Rev. Todd Holtzclaw officiating. Visitation for Shirley will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 20, 2010, at the Cox and Son Funeral Home in New Haven. Interment will be in Union Ridge Cemetery.
