Batteau on track with 2013 real estate taxes; Appeals must be made by April 14

Supervisor of Assessments John Batteau said he is on schedule or a little ahead schedule for the 2013 real estate taxes. The abstract was sent to the Illinois Department of Revenue on March 12. He hopes to receive a tentative multiplier in the next few days.

Batteau's office sent 715 notices of changes in assessments on March 14. The notices were also published in the paper.

Taxpayers who dispute their assessment must file a complaint with Batteau's office in the Government Building before April 14. They will be assigned an appointment for the Board of Review when filing their complaint.

The Board of Review will meet April 8, 10, 15 and 16 from 1 to 6 p.m. in the board room of the County Government Building. Additionally, April 22 and 24 have been set aside for the Board of Review to meet if necessary.

Based on real estate sales in 2010, 2011 and 2012, Batteau's office has determined the township equalization factors for Perry County. Pinckneyville (5-3) has an equalization factor of 1.0888, Du Quoin (6-1) has a factor of 0.9901 and all other townships have a factor of 0.9928. Equalization factors are applied to all property except farm and coal. 2013 farmland values are 10 percent higher for all productivity indexes than in 2012.

In other business, the board:

• heard from Alfred Bathon that the right-of-way across from his home needs to have dirt added to smooth it out and an additional tile. It is dangerously steep and difficult to mow. Bathon has been mowing the right-of-way for several years. He spoke to County Engineer Doug Bishop about it, but nothing was done. He then spoke to current County Engineer Brian Otten shortly after he came to work here and nothing has been done about it. Otten said the project is on his list, but will not be prioritized over collapsed pipes that allow roads to wash away and highly traveled bridges that need work. Commissioner Bobby Kelly said he would go look at the problem.

• heard from Solid Waste Coordinator Becky Tracy that Jackson County is hosting a shred day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on April 12 at the Jackson County Health Dept. Perry County residents may take documents for shredding, eyeglasses, compact fluorescent lamps (no tubes or incandescent bulbs) and mercury thermostats and thermometers there for disposal. The event is for residents not businesses, schools, governments or other large generators. Tracy said she is working with both Jackson and Randolph Counties on hazardous household waste collection days. She will work the events, allowing Perry County residents to bring their waste to Randolph or Jackson County. Tracy will publicize the events once dates are chosen.

• re-appointed John Nehrkorn to the Pinckneyville Rural Fire Protection District for a three-year term to expire April 30, 2017.

• passed a resolution approving Perry County's annual contribution of $5,587 to the Greater Egypt Planning and Development Commission. The fee is based upon the population in the most recent census.

• passed a resolution approving raffle licenses for Perry County Sportsman Club and Caring and Sharing Thrift Shop.
