Prep Track & Field: 'Dogs turn in 4 first-place finishes
The Harrisburg High School boys' track and field team turned in four first-place finishes at the Benton Spring Fling over the weekend and finished with a dozen Top 3 finishes in all.
"Today, we had four first place finishes and honestly I thought we could have had 4-5 more," Harrisburg head coach Zach Cox said. "That's part of Track and field in that some days other kids and teams have great days. We were short handed due to spring break and Easter weekend but still managed to come away with a dozen top 3 finishes."
Kane Carrigan won multiple events, taking the shot put with a toss of 46-feet-3 and the discus with a heave of 137-feet-3.
Michael Victoria won the 800 meters with a time of 2:02.5 and Corbin Crim returned from a hamstring injury to take first place in the 100 meters with a time of 11.4.
"Everyone was glad to see Corbin get back on the track after almost a month off due to a hamstring," Cox said. "He ran very well for the time off and hopefully that will give him the confidence to start taking some steps in the right direction. Michael Victoria continues to impress meet after meet. He ran a sevebn second PR in the 800M for 2:02 which is really close to where (Luke) Horton started last outdoor season. He also had our two best relay splits of the day so we are all excited to see how fast he can get. Kane won both of he events today without his best performances. He's been throwing 52 feet and 150 feet in the shot and discus for practice so he just has to find his groove. When that happens he will be one of the very best throwers in the state."
Austin Lowry finished second in the pole vault, clearing 13-feet, while Tylor Marler placed second in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 15.6.
Other second place finishes included the 4x100 relay team of Cody Rightnowar, Aaron Stephens, Victoria and Crim, who finished in a time of 44.7, while the 4x800 relay team of Adarsh Manawa, River Jordan, Aidan Blades and Donny Hicks crossed the line at 9:17. The 4x400 relay team of Victoria, Stephens, Rightnowar and Marler had a time of 3:39.
Stephens finished third in the 400 meters with a time of 55.0, while Rightnowar was third in the 300 hurdles, finishing at 43.1. Finally, Jordan was third in the 1600 meters, crossing the line at 5:05.
"Lowry, Marler, Stephens, Rightnowar, and Jordan all had nice performances in their events. When everyone puts it together we could score a lot of points this year. One thing I was frustrated about was not winning a relay. This was the first local meet we have been to in a long time and not won a relay. I just want to get back in school and get everyone focused on the last few weeks we have and it will come together," Cox said.
