Pink Event has '50s theme
Break out the poodle skirts, ladies!
A 1950s-themed Pink Event luncheon will be held March 7 for the benefit of the American Cancer Society.
Called "Bebop in a Cure," the event is a cancer awareness luncheon 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the McKinley Avenue Baptist Church Life Center, 410 W. Sloan St., Harrisburg.
Working in conjunction with the annual Relay for Life, five women teamed up to raise funds all year for cancer research. They all work for the Liberty Utilities in Harrisburg and they raised $10,000 for three years in a row.
Mary McSparin is one of the five women who make up the "Liberty Utilities Luminars." This team makes great numbers by working year round. They put on a gun shooting event in April along with cooking and selling food at the Saline County "Life On The Frontier" event. In May they show up at Kroger Days to cook and sell food. Then, in June, they sponsor a golf outing. The annual relay is in June each year also. In September the ladies sponsor a car show at the Saline County Fairgrounds followed by cooking and selling food at the county museum's Bluegrass Festival.
The team includes Mary McSparin, Marsha Kuppart, Paula Fulkerson, Barbie Abraham and Lori Storms.
The luncheon each March is their most profitable event and includes a lot of extras:
Fashion show
Silent auction
Vendors
Choir member performance
Barbershop quartet
Giveaways
A presentation by Dr. Dale "Buck" Hayes, chairman of the Southern Illinois University Department of Physiology will follow the luncheon. Hayes is a recognized expert in the field of obstetrics, gynecology and ovarian cancer.
Attire from the 1950s period is not required, but would be appreciated.
