That the umpire missed the call hardly matters (except, of course, to the Mets). What matters is that Ryan Theriot put the ump in a position to screw up by exhibiting the kind of hustle that has made him a leading candidate for mayor of Cubbieland.

After hitting a weak, two-out grounder to New York shortstop Jose Reyes, far too many players would have justified jogging to first by saying: "Why bother? This guy has the best arm in baseball." As Cubs observers have come to know, that's not Theriot's style.
