SOFTBALL: Z-R-C hammers Elverado 15-1
Zeigler-Royalton hammered away on Elverado in the Lady Falcons' home softball opener on Friday, pounding they way to a 15-1, five inning victory in Vergennes.
EHS registered just three hits and trailed from the get-go, as starter Britani Prescott endured a rough outing as she tries to rebound from a recent illness.
"We are trying to get Britani's strength back, she's been very sick," said Elverado head coach Donette Wheatley. "She said her ball was moving like it should."
Three first-inning errors by the Lady Falcons opened the door for a four-run frame by the visitors.
Elverado got one of them back in the bottom half after base hits by Cheyenne Abbadusky and Paige Newfarmer, but would get just one hit the rest of the way and strike out eleven times in eighteen official at-bats.
Meanwhile, Z-R kept pouring it on, scoring five runs in the second inning and six more in the third.
"Got to give Z-R credit, they hit the ball very well," Wheatley said. "We really took it on the chin. No time to dwell though, we have four games next week."
Baylie McClanahan (1-2) joined Abbadusky (1-3, R) and Newfarmer (1-2) as the only Lady Falcons to hit safely in Friday's game.
Elverado (0-2) is at home on again on Monday hosting Egyptian. The home stand continues on Wednesday through Friday, as Sparta, Dongola and Marissa visit Vergennes Grade School.
