10 things to look for when picking a day care

A list of 10 questions to ask, and answer, for parents - and licensors - looking at day cares.

<li>Are those working in the day care program trained in CPR and first aid?</li>

<li>Do they know to detect, prevent and report child abuse?</li>

<li>Are there different areas set aside, for different types of play, such as books, blocks, art, etc.?</li>

<li>Do infants and toddlers have interactive toys that "do something" when played with?</li>

<li>Is there a schedule, listing what the children will do, eat and learn on a given day or week?</li>

<li>Have background checks been conducted on all adults who work in the center?</li>

<li>What's the plan if a child gets injured, sick or lost?</li>

<li>Have all the children in the program gotten required immunizations?</li>

<li>What's the condition of the playground equipment?</li>

<li>Are medicines, cleaning supplies and other poisonous materials kept well out of children's reach?</li>
