TRACK & FIELD: Benton wins 1st Bob Karnes Relays at DHS
The 1st Annual Bob Karnes Relays at Du Quoin High School are in the books, and the Benton Rangers will go down as the inaugural event champions after out-pointing the second-place Indians 79-64. Fairfield finished third, Christopher was fourth.
DHS picked up victories in five of the eighteen events, and came eyelashes away from wins in three others.
Devin Jones, Howard Clark, Brandon Melvin and Jake Patterson combined on a dominating victory for the Indians in the discus relay, totaling 353'11.5" to out-throw second-place Fairfield by over 90 feet.
Caleb Vogel, Tucker Kuhnert and Sam Heumman teamed up for a height of 11'4 in the high jump to take the win in that event.
The Indians also won the 1600 meter freshman relay and both the high hurdles and intermediate hurdles relays.
DHS's long jump and triple jump teams missed out on wins by just a few inches, and Harley Gassel was second in the 110 meter high hurdles by one tenth of a second to Benton's Eli Pemberton.
Up next for the Indians' track and field squad is a trip to Sparta on Friday for the Buzz Bradley Invitational. Their next home meet will be the Du Quoin Classic held on May 8.
