Prep Baseball: Bulldogs drop two over weekend
After holding off a late rally to beat Eldorado in the season opener, the Harrisburg baseball team faltered on the road over the weekend, losing a twin bill at O'Fallon, where the host team won 10-0 and that followed a 3-2 loss to Anna-Jonesboro.
Against O'Fallon, Harrisburg was limited to just three hits, which came from Cooper Thompson, Nick Davis and Noah Vallette.
The two teams played to a 0-0 tie through the first three innings until O'Fallon platted three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. O'Fallon responded with four runs in the bottom of the fourth and three more runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Blake Buchanan (0-1) took the loss on the season, pitching 3 1/3 innings, allowing three runs (all earned) on five hits, while walking three.
Brennan Street, Logan Boon and Bryce Emery all saw mound time in the loss.
Anna-Jonesboro 3, Harrisburg 2
Anna-Jonesboro rallied in the bottom of the sixth to score two runs and pushed ahead the game-winning run in the bottom of the 10th to send the Bulldogs (1-2) to their second loss of the day Saturday.
Cooper Thompson finished off a 3-for-5 day at the plate with an RBI, while Brady Mayer went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Matthew Phipps, Ryan Luce and Davis all had a hit, while Carson Batts and Phipps each scored a run.
Luce took the loss in relief for Harrisburg, giving up a run and a hit with a strikeout.
Phipps got the start, going 5 1/3 inning, allowing two runs on five hits, while walking three and striking out two.
Isaac Pender got the win for Anna-Jonesboro (1-3) in relief of Tyler Vaughn, who struck out 12, while allowing one run on four hits.
Harrisburg returns to action with a full slate of games this week. The Bulldogs play at Rent One Park Monday against Vernon Hills at 6 p.m. Harrisburg will host Plains on Tuesday and are at Carterville Wednesday. The week concludes with Harrisburg playing host to Rochelle and Pinckneyville Saturday.
