Prep Soccer: Dog's dominance continues
The Harrisburg High School soccer team scored four second half goals Saturday to knock off Herrin.
Carver Gregg scored four goals for the Bulldogs (8-2), three of which came in the second half, while his goal in the first half tied the game at 1.
Anfernee Houston scored the other goal in the second half and finished with two assists on the day.
Ryan Cowsert and Britten Riden split time in goal for the Bulldogs, with Cowsert picking up the win as the senior saved four goals. Riden, in 13 minutes of work, saved one goal.
"We struggled the first half with finding the back of the net," Harrisburg head coach Michael Stewart said. "We had several opportunities, but it just wouldn't happen for us.
"The second half we got our heads in the game and things began to click. Carver Gregg had a great day with four goals and Anfernee continues to work the ball around and make the plays with two assists. Our defense played a much better second half as well. They did a better job of containing the Tigers' offensive attacks."
Harrisburg 6, Effingham St. Anthony 2
Houston scored two goals and provided two assists, while Cody Morris added a goal as Harrisburg knocked off Effingham St. Anthony 6-2 late last week.
Braden Duffield, Houston, Gregg and Morris all had first half goals as the Bulldogs took a 4-0 lead into the second half.
Sam Rodgers and Houston had second half goals to give Harrisburg all the insurance they needed for the win.
Cowsert and Riden, again split time in goal, with Cowsert getting the victory, saving six shots. In 14 minutes of action, Riden allowed two goals and saved one.
It was a game where Stewart said his squad had the most runs in a game all season.
"The passing looked really good, as well as, the overall ball movement. We are still having a little problem recognizing the field switching opportunities we are getting there. The guys in the backfield continue to shut the middle down on our opponents, which continues to play dividends for us."
