Big Ten notebook: Rooting out corruption among officials

Background checks of game officials by the Big Ten Conference will safeguard the league against gambling issues, commissoner Jim Delany said.

The FBI is investigating allegations that veteran NBA referee Tim Donaghy bet on basketball games over the past two seasons, including ones in which he officiated. For the past three years, the Big Ten conducted background checks on game officials in men's basketball, football and women's basketball.
