Prep Hoops: Opening Number
Following a season - opening win last week over Galatia-Thomsponville, the Harrisburg Lady Bulldogs opened a busy week of action with a 73-50 victory over defending champion West Frankfort Monday night at Davenport Gym in the 30th annual Harrisburg Preview Tournament.
Jake Stewart's club knocked down 12 3-pointers and placed three in double figures against a Redbird club who handed HHS its only tournament loss a season ago.
Kelsey Hobbs led the way with 22 points, Alexa Burris added 21, including 18 in the first half, and Lilee Robinson added 11.
Sophomore Lotte Miller scored nine for HHS, Toni Crisp added four points, while Matty Hawkins and Shianne Baker both scored two.
Harrisburg (2-0) lived from the outside in the first half and was able to lead throughout the first two periods thanks in large part to seven 3 - pointers over that span and enjoyed a 36-30 lead at intermission.
Frankfort (1-1) was able to pull to within 44-38 late in the third quarter, but more outside shooting helped the Lady Bulldogs enjoy a 54-38 edge entering the fourth.
Morgan Griffith scored 19 for West Frankfort. Teammate Emily Stewart added 11 points.
Harrisburg and Frankfort will meet each other again in just over a week in Max Morris Gym.
Eldorado 53, Carmi-White County 39
Eldorado stayed perfect on the early season, improving to 2-0 with a 53-39 win over Carmi-White County at the Harrisburg Invitational Monday night.
The Eagles put two players in double figures as Abby Steed scored a team-high 16 points, while Caitlin Stafford tacked on 12 points.
Takiya Britton tacked on nine points and Jacqlyn Artman added eight points. Olivia Parker and Rachel Stafford each finished with four points.
Much like Harrisburg and West Frankfort, Eldorado will see Carmi-White County in a little over a week, but head coach Scott Artman was pleased with what he saw in the early going as Eldorado shot 10-for-13 from the foul line.
The tournament continues tonight (Wednesday) when West Frankfort plays Anna-Jonesboro at 6 p.m. and Harrisburg will play Carmi-White County at 7:30 p.m.
The tournament concludes Saturday at Davenport Gymnasium.
