Biz Bits: Strange but true -- kangaroo gas can save farmers millions

There's been a plethora of bizarre business-related news this week. First there was a New York grocery store that advertised ham as "Delicious for Chanukah" (ham is most definitely not kosher), and then came news that the International Rhino Foundation was auctioning off rhino dung on eBay. But the story we liked best came out of Australia: Scientists there say they can save farmers millions of dollars - and help save the environment - by making cows and sheep "emit their gases" like kangaroos. Yes, that's right - scientists report that kangaroo stomachs have a bacteria that makes their flatulence environmentally friendly, as opposed to cows and sheep, which give off dangerous methane. The money saving comes into play because the bacteria in the kangaroo stomach makes it much more efficient and would cut feed costs. Scientists say, however, that they are probably three years from isolating the kangaroo bacteria, and then they have to figure out how to get it into sheep and cow stomachs. -- Source: AFP
