BASEBALL: Du Quoin wins Jr. Legion season opener at Wooden Bat Tourney
Du Quoin Post 647 came away with a win in their Junior American Legion baseball season opener on Wednesday evening, knocking off Murphysboro 7-3 with the aid of four shutout innings and a two-run double by Jordan Edwards.
Edwards gave up only one hit and walked two while striking out six to get the victory on the mound over Post 127 in Wooden Bat Tournament play. He added to a 1-0 Du Quoin lead in the top of the second inning with the two-bagger to bring in Bryce Clarry and Clayton Funk, who both walked to start the frame.
Post 647's second-inning didn't stop there. Brock Bullar and Braden Lee both added RBIs as Du Quoin piled on five to go up 6-0. It was 7-0 after Funk's RBI double in the fifth, which plated Lee.
Bryzn Witcher worked the fifth and sixth for Post 647, getting into some trouble in the latter with a pair of walks and a pair of hits that led to three runs, but Clarry came on to close out the ninth, hitting the first batter he face before retiring the next three in order.
Bullar (2-4, R, RBI), Lee (2-3, R, RBI), Funk (1-3, R, RBI, 2B, BB), Edwards (1-4, R, 2 RBI, 2B), Ashton Smith (1-4) and Ryne O'Rourke (1-2, BB) hit safely for Du Quoin.
