Prep Softball: Dogs Done In By CWC

Carmi-White County scored early and often Saturday as they shut out Harrisburg 14-0 en route to the Eldorado Class 2A Regional championship.

"We didn't play very well today," Harrisburg head coach Red Stafford said. "We missed some routine fly balls and just didn't play very good.

"We're not scoring to many runs, we knew that going in, but we knew we had to play good defense and we didn't."

Offensively, not much went right for Harrisburg either as the Bulldogs had just one hit on the afternoon, an Abby Dalton double to right center in the fifth as Dalton went 1-for-2 in the contest.

Harrisburg had just two base runners on the day, aside from Dalton, Brittany Hutchinson reached with one out on an error in the first, stole second, but was stranded as the Bulldogs closed the frame out going down swinging.

Stafford cited his team's youth as possibly getting the better of his ballclub Saturday.

"We're extremely young and we played like we were young today," he said. "Routine plays that should have been made weren't, especially in the outfield and you can't give a good hitting team like Carmi any extra opportunities.

Harrisburg said goodbye to three seniors, two of which were starters in Whitney Younger and Jessie Bramlet. Now Staffords attention turns towards the future.

"Make no mistake, Whitney and Jessie are going to be missed. They were great teammates and good kids and will be missed next year, but we have no juniors and the rest are freshmen and sophomores with a very good incoming class of freshmen coming in."

Stafford thanked T.A. Sullivan and the Harrisburg park district for their hard work this season and to Brett Sullivan and the softball booster club for their continued support.
