Gallatin County Historical Society honors 3
SHAWNEETOWN - Earlier this year, the Gallatin County Historical Society decided to promote and preserve the memories of Lucille Lawler, Jess Ann Logsdon and Betty Irene Head.
This trio of local ladies were instrumental in their roles as teachers, authors, librarians and historians by teaching the children and adults of Gallatin County over the past 50 years. Their legacies can be found in the Gallatin County Historical Society's archives housed in the John Marshall home Bank Museum in Old Shawneetown, and in the Shawneetown Public Library.
The society on Friday, Oct. 16 commemorated these three women by placing tree bracelets on trees planted in their honor, creating a living memory.
The bracelets were placed on each of three white dogwood trees planted earlier this spring. The tree bracelets are expandable and will grow with the tree.
The name of each honoree was laser-etched into the acrylic signs and are a reminder of the selfless work these wonderful ladies accomplished in their lifetime and then shared with the community they loved and lived in.
Attending the commemorative event were family members of the honorees: Monsignor Joseph Lawler; Bill Head, David, and Beth Head; Gallatin County Historical Society officers and members Laura Bentley Henson, president; Cindy Decker, membership chairman; Diane Patrick, secretary; Trisha Scates, treasurer; Christy Short, historian; Terry Butts, board of directors, and Wayne Short.
A special "thanks" goes to Katherine A. Schaffer of Lake Saint Louis, Missouri for donating the funds to purchase the tree bracelets. Katherine became aware of our project when she watched our video tour of the Marshall Museum on the historical society's Facebook page earlier this year. Her donation was a welcome surprise. The GCHS is busy getting ready for next year's tourist season. We will have new "old" items on display. We are hoping for a healthier year for everyone and are anticipating opening our museum doors to the public in May 2021.
