Obituary: Donald R. 'Don' Smith

</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[Donald R. "Don" Smith, 70, of 71 Brady St., Harrisburg, formerly of Equality, passed away on Wednesday, March 7, 2012 at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Ind., as a result of the Feb. 29 tornado in Harrisburg.

He was born on April 10, 1941, in Muddy, the son of John William and Edith (Dardeen) Smith. Don married Phyllis Kay Millspaugh on May 10, 1962.

He was a retired coal miner who worked at Eagle One and at the Keensburg Coal Mine, and also was a member of the Sons of the American Legion of the Equality McLain- Glover Post No. 595.

Don is survived by his wife, Kay Smith of Harrisburg; two daughters, Teresa Collins of Harrisburg and Ida and Brad Evans of Creal Springs; one sister, Donna Kay Wise of Carrier Mills; two grandchildren, Cory Ray Collins of Harrisburg and Hanna Kay Evans of Creal Springs; one great-grandchild, Nathan Andrew Collins of Ridgway; four nephews, Johnny and Kera Wise of Carrier Mills, Billy Joe Wise of Eddyville, Ronnie Eugene Smith of Eldorado and Jason Smith of Herrin.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, William E. Smith; and nephew, Terry Dean Wise. Don's little dog "Maggie" also perished in the storm.

There will be a graveside service for Don at Leavell Hill Cemetery near Junction at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, March 13, 2012, with Pastor Jerry Williams officiating; everyone attending should go directly to the cemetery. After the service, friends and family are invited to the Red Onion Restaurant in Equality to celebrate Don's life. Vickery Funeral Chapel in Equality will be in charge of arrangements.
