Chester frosh to play Missouri powerhouse Valle Catholic
The strength of schedule for the Chester freshman football team just got tougher.
Chester Athletic Director Mike Coffey has announced that the Yellow Jackets will travel to play Valle Catholic in Ste. Genevieve, Mo., on Thursday for a 6 p.m. contest at Father John Dempsey Field.
The Yellow Jackets had been scheduled to visit Johnston City this week, but that game was cancelled after the Indians informed Chester they only had nine available players.
"Other than not seeing them, I think it's great," said Chester freshman coach Charles Colvis of Valle Catholic. "At this lower level, our job is to teach and to coach and you can't do that without games.
"I'm thrilled, I think it's a good thing."
According to Yellow Jacket Radio, this will be the first football contest between the schools since 2003. In 2005, Chester picked up St. Vincent out of Perryville at the freshman level and played them until 2010, when the Yellow Jackets entered the Black Diamond Conference at all levels.
According to the school's website, Valle Catholic has amassed more state football titles (13) than any other school in the history of state, including winning the Missouri Class 1 state title last year.
The varsity Warriors - who are the top-ranked team in Class 1 this season - have also been state finalists in 1993, 2009 and 2012 and haven't lost a game since dropping the 2012 state final game to Hamilton.
Chester (2-1, 2-0 BDC) comes into the contest having defeated Sesser-Valier-Waltonville-Woodlawn 34-14 last week thanks in part to 216 yards and four touchdowns from Drake Bollman.
Bollman became only the third freshman to run for more than 200 yards in a game in modern CHS history and first since 2011.
To reach Father John Dempsey Field, take Missouri Highway 51 to "H" Road, turn right and follow to St. Mary. Turn onto Highway 61 north and head towards Ste. Genevieve.
After entering the city limits, stay on Highway 61 until you come to the first stoplight. Turn left on "M" Road.
The football field will be on your right about a half mile down the road.
