Multiple agencies are investigating a shooting that occurred in the early morning hours of Sunday in an apartment located at 140 W. Broadway St. in Sparta.

According to Randolph County Coroner Randy Dudenbostel, the deceased is 24-year-old Josh Young, of Sparta.

"At this point, it's undetermined whether it is a homicide or suicide," said Sparta Police Chief Sean Lukes said. "We're still waiting for forensics to come back and the autopsy to be completed. It's still under investigation."

Lukes said Young's autopsy is scheduled for today and officers received a 911 call at 2:08 a.m. that a person had been shot. Officers with the Randolph County Sheriff's Office, Sparta Police Department and Illinois State Police responded to the scene and found Young dead with a single gunshot wound to the head.

Dudenbostel said Young was pronounced dead at 2:17 a.m.

"ISP collected evidence and processed the scene and we'll be taking the investigation over from there," Lukes said.

Lukes said officers are still conducting interviews with persons of interest. The Herald Tribune will have further updates on the situation as they become available.

Also on Sunday, a 59-year-old Gateway Mine employee was found unresponsive inside the mine, according to Dudenbostel.

Glen Campbell, of Sparta, was pronounced dead at 8:56 p.m. The Gateway Mine is located off Zeigler Road near Coulterville.

"Help was called, they brought him to the surface, where he was pronounced dead," Dudenbostel said.

That incident is also under investigation by the Illinois Department of Labor, mine owner Peabody Energy and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
