SIC celebrates Class of 2025 at 63rd commencement
Southeastern Illinois College recognized its 63rd graduating class during a commencement ceremony held last Thursday evening in Joseph Deaton Gymnasium. The 232 graduates, representing eight U.S. states and Canada, were celebrated by family, friends, and college faculty and staff.
SIC President Dr. Karen Weiss welcomed guests and delivered the Charge to the Graduates, emphasizing the perseverance, adaptability and community spirit demonstrated by this year’s class.
“In a world that can feel increasingly fast-paced and far away from places like this, it’s important to remember that some of the most valuable skills don’t just come from a textbook,” Weiss said. “They’re forged in real life — in long shifts and late nights, in caring for kids while attending class, in commuting long distances to chase a dream.”
Weiss also recognized numerous academic and cocurricular achievements from the past year, including state championships earned by the college’s speech, Model Illinois Government, and esports teams. She highlighted student success stories that reflected personal resilience and a strong work ethic — hallmarks of SIC’s mission.
Board of Trustees Chair Debbie Hughes formally conferred the degrees. Weiss also presented the candidates for graduation.
While the 2025 Distinguished Alumnus, Dr. Robert Edward Winters, was unable to attend, his address printed in the ceremony program encouraged graduates to lead with purpose, humility and compassion.
Music for the evening was provided by SIC English instructor and Forensic Falcons Director Jenny Billman, who performed piano selections during the prelude and recessional.
A reception followed the ceremony in the Harry L. Crisp Student Center. Photo backdrops were available for graduates and their families in both the Student Center and Lobby.
