Prep Softball: Harrisburg drops two over weekend

Harrisburg lost two on Saturday - this after winning a pair of SIRR Ohio games Thursday and Friday.

Over the weekend, Harrisburg fell to Mt. Carmel 5-4 and then lost to IHSA 3A Mt. Vernon 3-1.

The Bulldogs (15-4) picked up a win over West Frankfort Thursday and won a crucial Ohio conference victory over Murphysboro on Friday.

On Saturday, Kerrigan Payne (13-4) took both loses in the circle. Against the Aces, she allowed five runs (two earned) on nine hits, while striking out one and walking one.

Abby Stacey led the Bulldogs at the plate, going 3-for-3 with four RBI including a three-run home run to right center field in the fifth inning.

Payne finished 2-for-4 on the day, while Kinzleigh Smothers went 1-for-3.

In the loss to Mt. Vernon, Payne gave up three runs (one earned) on six hits, while striking out eight and walking one.

Harrisburg had just three hits on the day as Payne went 2-for-3 and Kaylee King was 1-for-3.

On Friday, Harrisburg beat Murphysboro 5-1, where Payne earned the victory in the circle, going seven innings and allowing one run on three hits, while striking out seven and walking five.

Stacey continued her hot streak at the dish going 2-for-3 with three RBI. The freshman infielder drove in a run for Harrisburg in the first inning with a double and added two more runs in the fifth when she doubled off the fence in right center.

Joey Quinn, Liza Wiggins and Payne all had one hit as Quinn finished with two RBI.

On Thursday, Harrisburg improved to 4-1 in conference play with a 6-0 win over West Frankfort.

Payne scattered four hits on the afternoon, striking out two and walking one. The senior also went 2-for-3 at the plate.

King joined Payne with a 2-for-3 day as King had a game-high four RBI.

Hallie Boggess, Quinn and Stacey all had one hit with Quinn and Boggess each finishing with an RBI.
