Harrisburg Kiwanis welcome Fire Chief John Dunning

On Aug. 25, Harrisburg Fire Chief John Gunning updated the Harrisburg Kiwanis Club about happenings in the city.

He told the club that fire department staff are taking classes to become licensed EMTs so they can assist EMS staff with runs - which will be particularly helpful during the current COVID surge.

Final asbestos testing on the old Malan Jr. High building is being conducted, so that demolition may be completed once it is cleared. Gunning indicated there are a couple of new businesses in the works, including Wendy's which is set to begin construction on Route 45 where the old NAPA building was located.

Also, Little Tractor and RIDES Mass Transit District plan to expand with additional staff to be added.

Other projects discussed were changing Garden Heights Road, acquiring abandoned and dilapidated properties for destruction or remodeling for resale, redoing Highway 13 at the Carrier Mills Blacktop and the upcoming Sasquatch Festival.

Harrisburg Kiwanis holds a noon meeting every Wednesday at Morello's Restaurant. Anyone is welcome to attend.
