Gregory Blayne Arnett, son of Terry and Stacy Arnett of Dowell, won first place in the Rend Lake Baby Contest. Gregory is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Gregory of Du Quoin and Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Arnett of Pinckneyville ... The Rebecca Circle of the First Christian Church met in Fellowship Hall for an indoor picnic. Reverend Bob Dailey gave the blessing for the meal. Those present were Roberta Mathis, Peggy Green, Ernestine Livesay, Alma Knight, Elizabeth Kirkland, Margery Daffron, Vivian Thomas, Evelynn Vancil, Lucy Frederick, Iris Montgomery and guests Dorothy Jacoby, and Carlie McGuire ... Mr. and Mrs. C. R. "Scotty" Maxton of 615 South Washington Street in Du Quoin will observe their 60th wedding anniversary with a special open house on Sunday, June 28, at the First United Presbyterian Church of Du Quoin. C. R. "Scotty" and Arline Davison Maxton were united in marriage on June 29, 1932, in Du Quoin. They have four children, F. M. "Frank" Maxton, Phyllis Hershey, Jerry D. Maxton and Luana Maxton.

Jim Dimitroff, president of the Du Quoin Jaycees, and Clifford "Punk" Harrell, state director, attended a South Region officers workshop Sunday in Mount Vernon ... The St. John's United Church of Christ Musketeers went on a bike ride and picnic at the fairgrounds. Those attending were: Jane, Mike and Denny Bird, Ida Ruth and Barbie Anderson, Pat and Nan Huite, Robin Juhl, John and Julie Stoner, Tommy Mifflin, Tracy Thing, Stacey Kroeger, Michelle Bigham, Camdon Hottes, Jana and Eric Lindner, David Hopkins, Curt Mercier and Kristy Jones.

Sgt. Milton H. Graham, son of Mr. and Mrs. A.L. Graham has passed necessary examinations and is awaiting assignment to aviation cadet training, he writes his parents from Waco, Texas, where he is with the 468th school squadron of the Air Corps Basic Flying School. He told his mother he probably would be assigned to Kelly Field at San Antonio ... Little Miss Angela Jean Wilson celebrated her third birthday yesterday afternoon with a lawn party at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Russell Wilson. The little guests included Richard Allen, Donald Chapman, Ross Mayor, Jimmie Patterson, Bobbie Atwood, Billie Arbeck, Marsha Faye Wiehn, Julie Mitchell, Dona Hamrock, Erin McClure and Janet Ruth Huie.
