Some flooding reported in Harrisburg

<p id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1493644494601_2152"><span id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1493644494601_2131" style="color: black;">HARRISBURG - Excess water made some streets in Harrisburg impassible by car for several hours on Saturday. After more rain Saturday evening and through noon Sunday, streets in low-lying areas once again were flooded.</span>

<p id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1493644494601_2129" class="yiv8441243341ydp91d710c9ydp9b24554dmsonormal"><span id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1493644494601_2128" style="color: black;">Paula Stroub, a resident of Oral Street, was monitoring the water surrounding her mobile home in the afternoon on Sunday.</span>

<p id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1493644494601_2127" class="yiv8441243341ydp91d710c9ydp9b24554dmsonormal"><span id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1493644494601_2132" style="color: black;">"It's beginning to come down a little bit now," Stroub said, pointing to a water mark on a large storage building nearby. "Once the rain stopped, it started to drop. I'm going to see if the police can help me watch this area here, just in case."</span>

<p id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1493644494601_1980" class="yiv8441243341ydp91d710c9ydp9b24554dmsonormal"><span id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1493644494601_1979" style="color: black;">Harrisburg Mayor John McPeek, speaking by telephone Sunday afternoon was actively monitoring water levels with city Water and Sewer Superintendent Kelly Hefner.</span>

<p id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1493644494601_1968" class="yiv8441243341ydp91d710c9ydp9b24554dmsonormal"><span id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1493644494601_1967" style="color: black;">"We've had a lot of water, and right now we're pumping and sandbagging," McPeek said. "We were in pretty good shape Saturday, but the extra rain has been a little problematic."</span>

<p id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1493644494601_2142" class="yiv8441243341ydp91d710c9ydp9b24554dmsonormal"><span id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1493644494601_2141" style="color: black;">Street and Alley personnel could be seen adjusting "water on road" signs along with temporary barriers and manning high water spots to keep motorists from attempting to drive through flooded streets.</span>

<p id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1493644494601_1998" class="yiv8441243341ydp91d710c9ydp9b24554dmsonormal"><span id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1493644494601_1997" style="color: black;">Harrisburg has, for many years, had flooding issues. Though the Flood of 1937 is the most well known, the city experienced flooding twice within the past decade. After a 2011 flood caused damage to several businesses and homes, the city began an aggressive approach to mitigate future high water levels.</span>

<p id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1493644494601_1999" class="yiv8441243341ydp91d710c9ydp9b24554dmsonormal"><span id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1493644494601_2140" style="color: black;">The city built additional water holding ponds and cleared ditches and drainways.&#160;</span>

<p id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1493644494601_2001" class="yiv8441243341ydp91d710c9ydp9b24554dmsonormal"><span id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1493644494601_2000" style="color: black;">Former Mayor Eric Gregg, who was mayor during that time, said that while he knew some people still were dealing with flooding over the weekend, the city appeared to be handling the heavy rains better than in past years.</span>

<p id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1493644494601_2136" class="yiv8441243341ydp91d710c9ydp9b24554dmsonormal"><span id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1493644494601_2139" style="color: black;">"If we had this much rain several years ago, there would be much more damage than there was this weekend," Gregg said.</span>
