6-year-old injured in Route 3 crash

A 6-year-old Evansville boy was transported to a regional hospital with incapacitating injuries as a result of a two-vehicle collision on Route 3 northwest of Evansville on Thursday.

According to the Illinois State Police's preliminary accident report, a 2012 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 pickup, driven by 29-year-old Matthew A. Hornbostel (of Effingham) was driving south on South Prairie Road when he failed to stop at the intersection of Route 3.

The pickup collided with a northbound 2007 Ford Taurus, driven by 39-year-old Jamie L. Simpson (of Evansville), on the passenger side and pushed the Taurus off the roadway and into the ditch.

Hornbostel was uninjured in the collision, while Simpson suffered minor injuries and refused treatment at the scene. The child was a passenger in Simpson's vehicle and was airlifted out.

Hornbostel has been cited for failure to stop at a stop sign. Additional charges could be pending once further investigation is completed.

The accident was reported at 4:58 p.m. Traffic was re-routed around the accident scene, with Randolph County sheriff's deputies assisting.
