Sons helping those in need
The holiday season always has been a time for giving, and the Sons of the American Legion Post No.167 are keeping the giving alive.
This area is littered with food pantries, clothes closets, toiletry pantries and charitable organizations. Mary Reed, director of the Christian Community Compassion Center, or 4 Cs; Don Nalley, head of the Food Pantry; and Rev. Ownly Williams, head of the Harvest Deliverance Center have tirelessly made an effort to strengthen the giving nature of churches for our area.
"It is unusual for all churches to come together and work with something," said Reed. "But the 4Cs brings them all together."
Roy Gorman, member of Post No. 167 of the Sons of the American Legion, which is a group of men whose parents or grandparents served in the Armed Forces, has volunteered for the 4Cs for several years and for the last five has made a considerable donation on behalf of the Sons to both the 4 Cs Food Pantry and Helping Hands (North Jackson Street), as well as the Harvest Deliverance Center located on East Church Street.
In addition to the donations to the charities, Post No. 167 are one of the largest contributors of scholarships to Harrisburg High School.
"Without the volunteers, none of this would be possible," Gorman said.
