GIRLS BASKETBALL: Rangerettes remain unbeaten after win at Pinckneyville
The Rangerettes outscored the Lady Panthers 39-14 after the opening period on their way to a 52-25 win at Pinckneyville, getting double-digit scoring efforts from Taylor Mosely (14 points) and Ally Gischer (11).
PCHS hung around for eight minutes, trailing just 13-11 after one quarter, but only scored seven points in the second quarter and only seven more in the entire second half.
"There weren't a whole lot of positives for us tonight," said Lady Panthers head coach Alan Engelhardt. "I thought we did some good things in the first quarter, getting the ball inside-out and keeping up with them scoring the ball. After the first quarter, we were pretty easy to defend, letting them guard us one-one one and never causing them to have to help on the post, on screens, or on ball-screens. For us to be effective offensively, the defense must have to help and create openings for us. Benton is a good basketball team, but I definitely feel that we are capable of competing better."
No Pinckneyville players scored more than Sophie Keith's 6 points. Caitlyn Anderson, Gabby Bartnicki and Mayci Doerflein each had 4. Taylor Smith, Raygan Yates and Megan Breslin all finished with 2. Mariah Clark added 1 point.
Haley Ing (8 points), Makayla Abney (6), Kaylee Pedigo (5), Marcela Mendez (4), Lacey Jerkins (3) and Alexis Abney (1) also scored for the Rangerettes.
Pinckneyville fell to 5-2, Benton improved to 7-0. The Lady Panthers are at Steeleville on Saturday at 1 p.m.
