Sheriff's office warns of IRS scam
Randolph County Sheriff Shannon Wolff is giving county residence notice of an IRS scam that has been recently trending.
"They'll call and they give fake IRS badge numbers," Wolff said. "They sometimes know the last four of your social security number and say you owe back taxes.
"They say they will file a lawsuit against you if you don't pay back taxes."
Wolff said his office has received 15 to 20 reports of the scam thus far, and the phone calls appear as coming from a Washington, D.C. area code.
"I think it's getting out that most people know it's a scam," Wolff said. "If people have fallen victim to it, I want to make sure they call us."
Wolff advised people to contact his office at 618-826-5484 if they have any information or believe they may have been targeted by the scam.
