Arrest made in Walsh Road incident

Randolph County Sheriff Shannon Wolff reported Tuesday that 32-year-old David L. Holder II, of Walsh, has been arrested in connection with the traffic crash that resulted in a residential fire on Walsh Road on Nov. 22.

In a news release, Wolff stated his office received a 911 call of a residential fire located at 5470 Walsh Rd.

Fire units were paged out at 10:18 p.m. and arrived to find a white 1998 Chevrolet G2500 van had driven through a detached garage and impacted with the west side of a trailer home.

No one was injured, but one of the trailer's residents, Eric DeRousse, told the Herald Tribune he was preparing for work and had exited the shower just five minutes prior to the van plowing into the bathroom.

"I came out and opened the passenger side door (of the van) to try and drag him out if need be and there was nobody there," DeRousse said.

DeRousse's girlfriend, Shawnee Childers, reported seeing the driver flee the scene. The van did not have license plates, while the Vehicle Identification Number was either pulled off or melted in the fire.

The van is not believed to be stolen.

"We did identify the vehicle, but several things led to us being able to identify the driver," Wolff said.

Holder was located on Monday and has been charged with leaving the scene of a property damage accident, driving with an expired license and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

"Generally speaking as a prosecutor, when someone flees the scene of an accident, we generally take into consideration whether drugs or alcohol was involved," said Randolph County State's Attorney Jeremy Walker. "Otherwise, why would they run?

"I want to be clear that that is not directed specifically toward this case, that is generally how I view them."

Holder was taken to Randolph County Jail, where he posted bond and was released.

"Whenever I receive the final information packet from the sheriff's office, I'm always looking for what else we can do," said Walker, when asked if he anticipated further charges to be filed. "I can't seem to find anything to fit other than the Class A misdemeanors, as frustrating as that can be."

According to local media reports, the couple is in need of clothing, dog food and other basic needs as they lost everything in the fire.

Childers wears small and medium shirts, size 7 ½ shoes and size 4 pants. DeRousse wears extra large shirts, size 10 ½ shoes and size 34/32 pants.

DeRousse's employer will provide him with new uniforms, but Childers is in need of work scrubs (size small, petite). Both are also in need of coats.

Donations can be dropped off at the Chester Police Department.
