BASKETBALL: Slow start for Elverado leads to Woodlawn win

Elverado couldn't buy a bucket early in Wednesday night's game against Woodlawn at the Du Quoin Tip-Off Classic, and the Lady Cardinals spread the scoring around amongst eleven players on their way to a 48-26 victory.

Seven different Woodlawn players scored in the first quarter, giving Woodlawn a 13-2 lead after eight minutes of play. Emma Bigham's baseline jumper was the only scoring for the Lady Falcons in the period.

EHS got buckets from Brooke Whittington, Allie Whittington and Brianna Tuthill in the second quarter to keep pace and enter the half down 20-9, but after the break Woodlawn's offense picked back up with an 11-5 third quarter to build a comfortable 17-point advantage.

Kiara Leuking had a game-high 11 points for the Lady Cardinals after not scoring in the opening period.

B. Whittington had 10 points to lead Elverado, A. Whittington had 6, Tuthill 4, and Bigham, Hannah Alstat and Hope Porter each had 2.

The Lady Falcons (0-2) will take on tournament-favorite Murphysboro (2-0) on Friday at 5 p.m. before returning Saturday to face Du Quoin (2-0) at 10 a.m. and Steeleville (0-2) at 4 p.m.
