BASKETBALL: Warriors whip Trico at DMS Tip-Off
Not only did they make it look easy, but they made it look fun, too. The Warriors absolutely pummeled Trico in their opening game of the Du Quoin Middle School Tip-Off Tournament, pulling away 50-6 by halftime on their way to a 75-19 victory.
A dozen different Warriors scored in the game with Braden Pursell's 15 points and Lomontay Daughtery's 13 points leading the way. The pair also led DMS in rebounding - Daughtery had 10 and Pursell had 8.
Du Quoin's first possession included five offensive rebounds before Pursell put in the game's first points. The Warriors ran out to an 11-0 start with help from a three-pointer by Alex Zimmerman.
Trico got their first points with 4:32 to go in the first quarter, then the Warriors went on another run, this time 16-0. Kadin Mays hit a triple and Daughtery had a three-point play during the spurt.
Du Quoin then held Trico without a field goal in the second quarter before resting all of their starters for the entire second half.
Dajon Johnson (8 points), Mays (7), Brian Winters (7), Alex Caldwell (7), Zimmerman (5), Dasani Edwards (4), Nick Depyatic (3), Owen Bradley (2), Wade Roberson (2) and Jacob Harsy (2) also scored for DMS. Winters and Mays shared the team lead in assists with 3 apiece.
The Warriors got their first win of the season this past Saturday at the Rend Lake Shootout, beating Meridian 54-44. Daughtery led Du Quoin in that game with 22 points, Pursell had 17, Mays 7.
DMS (2-0) is back in action again at the Tip-Off on Wednesday night against Benton at 7:30 p.m.
